Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services and/or the Grounds Supervisor, the Gardener will provide the necessary skilled labour in respect to the proper care and maintenance of all University grounds including rooftop gardens, living walls, etc. This includes planting, maintenance and care of turf, trees, shrubs, hedges, and flowers in addition to maintenance of hard ground and paved areas. Also included is the removal of rubbish or garbage from University buildings or grounds and snow/ice removal from specified campus areas.
The successful candidate will possess an Ontario Grade 12 Graduation Diploma or equivalent as recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Education with successful completion of a recognized program, such as the Ontario Diploma in Horticulture, Horticultural Technician – 441C or a program deemed equivalent in turf management, horticulture, or a related discipline. A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in Commercial Grounds operation and a current Pesticide Exterminator License recognized by the Ministry of the Environment are required. Certification or the ability to obtain certification in forklift, chainsaw, skid steer and other equipment operation within 6 months of starting in the position is essential. The successful candidate must have a valid Ontario Driver’s Permit “G" license and must obtain certification for a class “D” license with Z endorsement within 6 months of starting in the position; a driver’s abstract that is accepted by University’s insurance provider must be provided. Knowledge in MS Word, MS Excel and other related programs is essential, and knowledge in LANCAD is an asset.
