Position: Landscape Gardener

Position Description: The Garden Design, Enhancement and Maintenance Services provide a full gardening service to clients with limited or no lawns and extensive gardens. The Landscape Gardener is responsible for the design, enhancement and maintenance of clients’ gardens by using designing skills and good horticultural practices including: dividing perennials, pruning shrubs and trees, deadheading and natural pest control. Landscape Designs are designed as per Landcare clients’ specifications and drawn using the Dynascape landscape design software. Gardens are enhanced by recommending and implementing changes to existing planting and the addition of annuals and urns for seasonal interest.


Gardening specific:
Cultivating, deadheading and pinching of annuals and perennials, dividing and staking of perennials, weeding, shrub trimming, remove debris from properties, blow off hard surfaces, garden edging, grass cutting, spring and fall clean-up activities
Use horticultural best practices in the completion of gardening activities
Perennial, shrub, tree, annual and bulb planting
Add mulch/triple mix/compost to gardens
Identify and report pest problems
Read, understand and follow Landcare’s Garden Maintenance and Enhancement procedures

Design specific:
Take site pictures and complete site analysis
Take accurate site measurements including elevations
Draw base plans from site measurements or surveys
Communicate with Landcare clients to find out their wants and needs
Draw landscape designs as per client’s specifications
Add dimension and elevation to drawings
Follow Landcare’s established drawing standards

Wear personal protective equipment as required by the job
Follow manufacturers specifications for equipment use

Skills Required:

Gardening skills:
Diploma or certificate in horticulture
Minimum 2 years of experience as a practising gardener
Knowledge of horticultural practices and plant materials
Ability to recognize pests (insects, diseases and weeds) and to treat them in the most effective manner
Ability to arrange, plant and maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees according to the best horticultural methods
Capable of physical labour

Design skills:
Strong Microsoft Office skills
Excellent Dynascape skills
Excellent plant knowledge including botanical names
Experience taking site measurements
Experience of designing residential and commercial landscapes

Valid Ontario class G or G2 drivers license
Self-motivated, organized, enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions, good communication skills
