Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s (KPU) School of Horticulture invites applications for part-time non-regular type 1 contract instructor(s) to teach two courses in our Arborist Technician Apprenticeship program. The program commences January 11 to March 5, 2021 and is offered at the Langley campus.

The Arborist Technician Apprenticeship is the first of three sequential certificates that comprise the Arboriculture Trade within the Industry Trade Authority (ITA).  Apprentices attend KPU for their theoretical and practical technical training sessions. The following are brief descriptions of specific courses and lines and supplementary qualifications:

AARB 1015 –Rigging and Climbing (Lines F1 – F4, G1).  The course introduces rigging and climbing to the apprentice.  Selecting rope and equipment, knot selection and tying, and the evaluation of equipment wear are some of the course objectives.  Specific instructor qualifications include preference for ISA Certification in Tree Worker/Climber Specialist.

AARB 1016 –Tools and Equipment (Lines B1 – B4, C1 – C3).  Apprentices learn to safely operate a chipper and stump grinder and the ground tasks associated with lift truck operations.  The apprentices also learn the use and maintenance of a variety of smaller tools and equipment.  Specific instructor qualifications include a Class 1 driver’s license and 5 years lift truck operation with a safe work record.

Minimum general qualifications for this position include 5 years of relevant experience, completion or currently enrolled in the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program, or other post-secondary credential in adult learning.  Preference will be given to individuals with ISA Certification and experience teaching in a post-secondary.
