Seasonal Supervisor – Horticulture & Materials Collection

(Approx. 4 months)

 

BRANCH:   Horticulture/Materials Collection

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Basic Function: Reporting in the interim to the Director, Facilities & Infrastructure, this position is responsible for providing daily supervision and training to Horticulture and Materials Collection seasonal staff, as well as performing the daily operational requirements for all aspects of grounds maintenance.  This position will assist and provide support in implementing the approved Strategic Plan.

 

Responsibilities:

 

In conjunction with the Horticulture/Materials Collection Supervisors, supervises, directs, trains, evaluates, disciplines and assigns duties to seasonal staff working as waste/ recycling collectors and gardeners.

Familiar with seasonal duties which includes the servicing (as required) of road and interlock surfaces, collection and disposal of litter and waste from visitor amenities, monitoring and servicing picnic and event sites for waste and recyclables, coordinating adequate coverage of Zoo site in this regard by scheduling late and early shifts for weekends and week days.

Assist Manager/Supervisors in ensuring that non-permanent staff properly complete work assignments in a timely and effective manner.

Ensure that schedules for non-permanent staff lunches and breaks are properly adhered to.

Ensure that the Horticulture building, out buildings, sheds, and garage bays are kept clean and able to pass periodic Health and Safety inspection.

Ensure that equipment is kept in good running order and that the Manager/Supervisors are advised of the need for repairs and/or replacement of equipment, and replenishment of supplies.

Initiate work orders as required.

Assist Supervisors and/or Manager in determining staffing requirements on a daily basis with regard to scheduled special events.

Ensure doors to the Horticulture building are secured at the conclusion of the late shift and all equipment keys are returned to the lock box. Seasonal supervisor will account for all staff under their supervision prior to leaving the site at the conclusion of the late shift.

Ensure that staff work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS and Toronto Zoo safety policies and procedures.

Driving to various locations offsite and onsite in a Zoo vehicle.

Provide written shift reports as required.

Able to work shift work including weekends and holidays.

Other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.

Qualifications:

 

A community college level certificate or university degree in an aspect relating to the grounds keeping industry, or the equivalent amount of experience and training.

Experience in a unionized environment is preferred.

Must possess advanced planning, and supervisory skills with a minimum of two years experience in a supervisory capacity.

Candidate must be aware of the importance of customer service at the Toronto Zoo and be able to communicate this to seasonal staff.

Possess a valid Class G driver's licence valid in the Province of Ontario along with a good driving record (e.g. driving to various locations offsite and onsite in a Zoo vehicle).

Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing, using the English language.

Must have computer knowledge and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and email.

Must be capable of preparing brief but accurate reports.

Must possess a working knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and regulations.
