  • If successful for this temporary work opportunity or assignment, permanent employees who choose to accept said assignment and are members of Local 416 will retain their permanent status.
  • Successful candidates are required to complete the full duration of the temporary work opportunity/assignment

  • This temporary work opportunity or assignment may be subject to bumping in accordance with the "LETTER OF AGREEMENT for Temporary Work Opportunities/Assignments" under the TCEU Local 416 Memorandum of Settlement

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Prepares plants and maintains flower beds, horticultural displays and plants in greenhouses.
  • Maintains plant materials in a park area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Participates in the preparation, planting and maintenance of horticultural displays, turf grass areas, area plantings and landscapes.
  • Prepares various growing media prior to planting; gathering, cleaning and storing propagules; planting and transplanting as required.
  • Reports on plants, flowers bushes and trees on any damage, insect infestation or disease.
  • May be required to perform landscaping functions such as sodding
  • Performs other related work as assigned.
  • May be required to operate various tools and equipment related to horticulture such as rototiller, lawnmower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer
  • Performs work in a safe, efficient and courteous manner.

 

Key Qualifications:

 

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

 

  1. Proof of recent successful completion of a 10 month pre-apprenticeship program, 4 or more credits in a certificate program or 1 year of a diploma horticulture program
  2. Possession of G or "G1" or "G2" licence would be an asset.

 

You must also have:

  • Must have a fair knowledge of plant materials and the ability to propagate and grow a wide variety of plants for the beautification of park areas.
  • Ability to arrange, plant and maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees according to the best horticultural methods and to achieve an attractive appearance.
  • Ability to recognize and report insect pests, diseases and weeds and to treat them in the most effective manner.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to work nights, and week-ends during peak season.
  • Must be familiar with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations for the safe performance of his/her duties and responsibilities or capable of obtaining familiarity of same.
  • Ability to use or learn to use various technical devices related to the position.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
  • Ability to communicate in relation to their job duties.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties (accommodation will be provided in all parts of the hiring process as required under the City’s Employment Accommodation Policy and the Joint Modified Work Program in the Collective Agreement) and able to work in all weather conditions.

 

Additional Details:

  1. The Gardener 3 In Training is a training opportunity for which successful candidates can only complete two (2) term/assignments.
  2. Qualified candidates will be required to provide proof to demonstrate successful completion of horticulture certificate/programs as per posted qualifications.
