Reporting to the Supervisor of Horticulture or Supervisor of Parks these positions are responsible for preparing, constructing and maintaining various horticultural displays along roadways, boulevards and in parks throughout the City of Burlington.

In addition to the duties as outline above the Gardener is responsible to:

·         Lead crew in maintaining various horticultural displays

·         Prepare, install, maintain and remove plantings; including watering, amendments, fertilizing, weeding and pruning

·         Plan and execute traffic control measures when working along roadsides and on boulevards as is prescribed by Book 7

·         Perform minor adjustments, day-to-day and routine maintenance on equipment and tools used for horticultural tasks.

·         Train crew members on the safe operation of equipment, tools and safe work procedures along a roadside.

·         Operate a variety of equipment and tools safely to perform horticultural maintenance practices.

·         Participate in seasonal operations activities relating to loose leaf collection in the Fall and snow clearing in the Winter.

·         Complete administrative tasks in an accurate and timely manner; including daily activity sheets, training documentation and other required paperwork.

·         Comply with requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures.

The successful candidate will have experience related to the above-noted duties normally acquired through the completion of a 2-year post-secondary certificate or diploma in Horticulture, or a closely related field of study along with 1 – 2 years of relevant gardening experience. Candidates with the equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Applicants must possess or be willing to obtain a Class D-Z license and must have with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. 

Note: Candidates will be required to demonstrate their qualifications by passing a written or oral, and/or practical examination, as part of the recruitment process. 

Salary $23.90 per hour (90% of job rate $26.56)
