Islington Nurseries Ltd has been in the business for over 69 years and is experiencing year over year growth. So here we grow again. We are involved with various commercial projects and are well-known in our industry. Our divisions include our Landscape Maintenance Division, Stone Yard Division, Landscape Construction and Garden Centre.

We are looking for someone who wants to be an integral part of a large team and work together to achieve company objectives.

Location: North Hamilton

As a Tree Farm/Nursery Manager you will be required to plan, organize, direct, control, and coordinate activities of workers at this location daily. We are searching to identify an early candidate to start in February/March 2020.

Responsibilities:

Farm/Nursery Operations & Quality Control

  • Oversee all day to day operations
  • Planting as driected
  • Organize shipping of materials from field to sales yard or jobsite
  • Develop, organize and maintain a field maintenance schedule
  • Manage irrigation systems to water
  • Trouble-shoot as needed to keep the operation running smoothly
  • Create action plan for pests and diseases and monitor
  • Implement, develop and manage quality control programs
  • Ability to adapt to change, implement new processes
  • Knowledge and implementation of the best standards in nursery management to ensure quality and competitive edge over competition

Staff

  • Train and supervise all farm workers and ensure best practices are followed for tree and shrub preparation, digging, pruning, load handling techniques and irrigation
  • Must be able to anticipate changing staffing needs and resources needed for the smooth running of all operations
  • Able to work with a diverse workforce
  • Manage all safety procedures and ensure it is enforced
  • Must always maintain clean work areas
  • Other ad hoc duties as assigned

Equipment and Maintenance

  • Manage and operate tractors and other farm equipment
  • Oversee maintenance protocol for all equipment

Requirements:

  • Education in horticulture and/or coupled with proven experience
  • 2 years minimum in a supervisory role
  • Valid G drivers license with a clean abstract
  • Fluent English required and ability to speak Spanish as asset
  • Proven experience with pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, watering and best practice planting procedures
  • Possess leadership skills to inspire, motivate and lead a team
  • Must be dependable, organized and a problem solver
  • Must have a great work ethic, be a team-player and have an entrepreneurial drive
  • Ability to work extended hours as required including weekends during seasonal highs
