Job Description

The Greenhouse Manager is responsible for providing leadership to and building a strong, team that meets company objectives while ensuring Bylands provides excellent value to its customers. The Greenhouse Manager is responsible for daily operations in the Propagation and Perennials departments. This position has Manager Level purchasing authority.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate operations of the Propagation & Perennial areas.
  • Ensure health & growth of all plants in Propagation & Perennial departments.
  • Participate in creation of production plan to confirm that staffing & materials will meet anticipated demand.
  • Source & order supplies for the Perennial and Propagation departments
  • Participate in creation of department budgets, and review & approve team expenses
  • Develop direct reports:
    • Provide coaching, training & development, performance feedback
    • Motivate through frequent communication
    • Ensure responsibilities are distributed to maximize effectiveness and engagement
    • Authorize time-off requests, approve timesheets
  • Liaise with:
    • Project Manager to ensure all areas (and related equipment) are maintained in clean, safe and good working order
    • Plant Health Consultant to proactively resolve plant health issues
    • Inventory Coordinator to maintain accurate inventory levels & records
Working Environment:
  • Office – some sitting at desk, on phone.
  • Outside – hands-on, involves physical exertion requiring the ability to lift up to 10lbs, squatting, bending, extended time walking/standing. May be exposed to wide range of weather conditions including hot, cold, windy and/or wet.
  • Fast paced, high pressure environment during the spring shipping season
  • Diverse workforce with many ESL employees and guest workers from other countries.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in horticulture or a degree in horticulture from a recognized agricultural institution, or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience.
