Your opportunity:

Under the general direction of the Manager, Caretaking & Grounds Operations, the Supervisor, Facilities Operations - Grounds is responsible for the overall management of the grounds department. Duties include: the daily operation, maintenance and planning of all the hard and soft landscaped areas of the University of Toronto Scarborough, waste management and recycling programs; planning, preparing and managing the Grounds budget; managing, coordinating and planning the daily operation and work of appointed unionized staff and summer casual assistants; liaising with Human Resources, Health & Safety and other departments on all matters related to work performance, training, WSIB, absenteeism etc. 

The position will also lead the Grounds team in working with other members of the University Facilities and Design and Construction Management administration teams in management and execution of landscape projects coming out to the landscape and public space planning process. In addition, the position will provide technical support for campus initiatives such as the Campus Farm and the Campus roof top gardens and provide service and support to its wide array of outdoor athletic facilities. 

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising a wide range of activities of a medium-sized group of staff-appointed employees
  • Executing daily activities and introducing variations as required
  • Coordinating staff schedule to ensure proper coverage
  • Providing safety training and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
  • Gathering necessary data to prepare budget submissions
  • Explaining drawings and specifications to external contractors and our internal team
  • Liaising with contacts to complete specifications for new projects and conducting final inspection of work completed by contractors
  • Monitoring project accounts and reporting on estimated end-of-project costs

Essential Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Horticultural Science, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture or Forestry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years of related experience, including knowledge of turf management, landscape architecture and experience with integrated pest management and total plant health care
  • Experience supervising in a unionized environment
  • Demonstrated experience in Project Management
  • Must have knowledge of use of tools and be able to demonstrate use of tools and equipment owned or used by the department and its staff.
  • Must be knowledgeable and be able to demonstrate the repair of general equipment.
  • Must have good mechanical and computer skills; effective problem solving skills and demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be in possession of a valid Class “G” Driver’s license
