The Town of BWG is looking for a highly motivated and organized individual to join our parks operations team with the Community Services Department, Leisure Services Division beginning in January 2019.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Parks and Property, this position will be responsible for growing plants, designing and maintaining flower beds, natural area plantings, landscapes, horticultural displays, hanging baskets and greenhouses plants. You will also be preparing various growing media prior to planting; gathering, cleaning and storing propagules; planting and transplanting as required and determining and maintaining growing environments. In addition, you will inspect and treat plants, trees and shrubs for general health, insect infestation or disease; load/unload materials, plants, and deliver to various locations including parks, facilities and main streets. Experience operating various types of motor vehicles and mechanized grounds, garden and turf maintenance equipment, is needed and ability to qualify for the Town equipment operating permits and requirements. Additional duties include completing daily reports, responding to public inquiries, and directing staff and volunteers as needed.

Diploma or certificate in horticulture or equivalent and significant horticultural experience is required. The successful candidate will also have demonstrated knowledge of plant materials and ability to propagate, arrange, plant and maintain annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees according to the best horticultural methods to achieve an attractive appearance. Knowledge of pests (insects, diseases and weeds), and treatment is required as is the ability to make the most effective use of fertilizers and water requirements of a variety of plants. Working knowledge of related legislation and Occupational Health and Safety Act is needed. Ability to communicate effectively, professionally and courteously with all levels of staff, contractors and the general public is required; along with a valid Ontario class G driver’s license in good standing.

The Town offers an hourly range of $22.71 to $27.99 per hour (International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 793). Scheduled shifts are days, Monday to Friday, with occasional week-ends, as needed.
