Horticulture Assistant
In this full-time, experience-rich career-path summer position, the Horticulture Assistant (HA) assists to care and maintain the public gardens at Riverwood. The HA schedules, supervises and leads volunteer secondary students to help with the daily gardening activities and keep the gardens looking beautiful.
Position responsibilities
Reporting to garden management, the HA:
- maintains the Parker-Chappell House gardens;
- maintains the greenhouse;
- supports volunteer gardeners;
- installs annual flower beds and applies best management practices to maintain (water, weed, mulch, fertilize, dead-head) the gardens;
- assists the City Head Gardener to maintain the MacEwan Terrace Garden;
- organizes, schedules, tracks hours, supervises and leads secondary students;
- works with community groups and volunteers of different ages and abilities to garden;
- supports the Conservation Program to plant native trees and perennials, when needed;
- supports education programs and special events, when needed.
Skills and qualifications
- enrolled full-time in a college or university, with emphasis in horticulture, landscape, design, greenhouse, nursery, garden centre operations, science, botany, related discipline
- You must be planning to return to full-time studies the next academic year;
- hands-on gardening experience and ability to identify garden plants is an asset,
- sense of humour and excellent communication, organizational and multi-tasking skills;
- demonstrated leadership skills;
- ability to work safely as a team and independently with minimal supervision;
- ability to lead by example and work with volunteers of diverse backgrounds;
- appreciation of the environment, gardening and out-of-doors work;
- a valid Vulnerable Sector Check is required, or the ability to acquire one;
- basic computer skills; attention to details to track volunteer hours;
- training in emergency first aid and CPR is an asset, or training will be provided;
- A valid class “G” driver’s license is an asset;
