Lucy Maud Montgomery Children's Garden of the Senses
Seeking Program Instructor(s) - Background in any of Horticulture, Recreation, Early Childhood Education, or Older Adults Enrichment Programs
The Norval Community Association's (NCA) Lucy Maud Montgomery Children's Garden of the Senses (Garden) opened in Norval (Halton Hills) Ontario in May 2016. (The Garden was designed by a Landscape Architect and a graduate of the MLA program at the University of Guelph.) Engaging garden programs for children and seniors were successfully launched in June 2016. 2,500 children from elementary schools, Town of Halton Hills summer camps and day care centres participated in the garden programs during the summer 2016 and 2017. The Garden is a fun-filled interactive sensory garden that is used by children and people of all ages and abilities, in a physically active way, to gain a fuller appreciation of nature through the use of human senses. The Garden is therapeutic, inclusive and diverse, accommodating those with special needs, and has a programming area for children that is a play-based-learning environment which focuses on physical, social, emotional and cognitive development. Our garden initiative entails scaling up, creating and delivering a diverse portfolio of healthy active living quality garden programs to impact more people, focusing primarily on children, seniors, and people with limitations, including the financially disadvantaged.
The Norval Community Association is looking to hire the following part-time candidate:
1-2 Program Instructors to deliver garden programs for children, seniors and people with needs and to assist the Program Coordinator in program delivery. Duties would be carried out primarily during late May and June when most of the children's programs run (some children and older adults programs run in July-Sept). Pay rates are negotiable, based on relevant experience.
Qualifications: i) education, experience, and knowledge in horticulture and recreation programs, ii) some early childhood education and/or special education an asset, iii) some education/experience in horticultural therapy for seniors an asset, iv) a role model and a team-player.
Note: The garden programs commence late May or beginning of June, which is the busiest time, and they carry on through the summer to September. Programs are 1.5 hours in duration, morning and afternoon. Additional staff time for delivery of programs is required for organizing, set-up, and dismantling and obtaining gardening materials.
