Qualifications:
- Horticulture diploma or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Extensive knowledge of horticultural practices and procedures and extensive knowledge in grounds maintenance.
- Valid Class G Driver’s License.
- Valid Class DZ Driver’s License an asset.
- Landscape Exterminator Pesticides Licence.
- Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
- Minimum three years supervisory experience in horticultural maintenance including large equipment (trucks, tractors, loaders etc.).
- Additional experience should include scheduling, planning and budgeting. Interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal with the public with tact and courtesy.
- Ability to work from plans and blueprints.
- This position requires work in inclement weather.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides Manager with schedules, inspections, maintenance logs and other administrative reports.
- Controls expenses and purchases within approved limits, prepares capital equipment lists for Manager’s approval.
- Assists the Manager with estimates and prepares cost reports for materials and labour within approved budget and standards.
- Researches and gathers information for reports and investigations, as requested.
- Participates in tender and procurement process for capital equipment and services
- Maintains, reviews and controls: daily records, schedules and generates reports/memos that captures departmental labour hours/costs (Payroll and Human Resources documents), schedules staff, authorizes overtime, accident reports, inventories of supplies and equipment etc.
- Provides performance measurements as per Parks Maintenance Standards.
- Monitors staff to ensure performance measurements are established, recorded, and maintained including all Parks operations.
- Plans and organizes work to establish priorities, timing and cost control to determine needs for completion of projects with minimum public/facility disruption.
- Liaisons with School of Horticulture leadership team to determine appropriate allocation of resources throughout Botanical Gardens grounds.
- Assists School of Horticulture leadership team in monitoring, directing and evaluating student practical work.
- Provides the Manager with plans including tree requirements, annual bedding, perennials, fall bulbs, flower beds, turf grass, landscaping and planting requirements.
- Monitors to ensure proper snow and ice removal is achieved at Botanical Gardens and other areas of the NPC as necessary during winter months
- Represents NPC providing records and documentation during public litigation cases as required.
- Solicits staff participation to improve methods, practices or suitability of equipment or efficiency.
- Communicates Horticulture operational problems to Manager as necessary.
- Provides follow - up on customer complaints/concerns and takes required action; as well as liaisons with public regarding horticulture and general Commission information.
- Ensures that park maintenance equipment/vehicles are serviced and are in safe operating condition.
- Monitors and maintains building security and communicates any concerns to the Parks Police.
- Provides supervision and direction for Botanical Gardens Operations staff and ensures goals and objectives are met including quality, service and productivity standards.
- Ensures high level of staff performance through participation of the hiring process, staff development, training, motivation, performance management, discipline of bargaining unit staff and dispute resolution.
- Ensures that workers under their control work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, policies/procedures and are provided with the required training.
- Fills in for other supervisors and staff; attends management meetings as required.
- Coordinates the set-up for special events in the Botanical Gardens, including planning of staff and equipment.
- Assigns and follows up on various projects with staff/contractors to inspect progress and completion of work and provides technical guidance, advice and assistance to the staff.
- Works in cooperation with other areas of the Parks Department and other departments of Niagara Parks to achieve departmental and NPC goals.
Niagara Parks offers an annual salary of $63,150 to $75,470 as well as a comprehensive benefit and pension plan.
A successful Police Information Check is required for the selected candidate.
