In the Facilities Management department, we take pride in our buildings and grounds and provide a welcoming, service-oriented, clean and safe environment for our students, faculty and staff.  The Supervisor, Grounds Operation ensures that labour maintenance functions on the grounds are performed at an optimal level.

The Supervisor, Facilities Operations - Grounds is responsible for the overall management of the grounds department. Under the general direction of the Manager, Caretaking & Grounds Operations, the incumbent is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance and planning of all the hard and soft landscaped areas of the University of Toronto Scarborough, waste management and recycling programs. Duties include: planning, preparing and managing the Grounds budget; managing, coordinating and planning the daily operation and work of 11 appointed unionized staff and up to 11 summer casual assistants; liaising with Human Resources, Health & Safety and other departments on all matters related to work performance, training, WSIB, absenteeism etc.

 

Qualifications

Education:
Two year College Diploma in Horticulture or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
Minimum of eight (8) years’ related experience, including knowledge of turf management, landscape architecture and experience with integrated pest management and total plant health care, including a minimum of four (4) years’ experience supervising unionized employees, creating Service Agreements, tracking budget expenditures and facilitating meetings with stakeholders. Must have demonstrated experience in Project Management.

Skills:
Must have knowledge of use of tools and be able to demonstrate use of tools and equipment owned or used by the department and its staff. Must be knowledgeable and be able to demonstrate the repair of general equipment. Must have: good mechanical and computer skills; effective problem solving skills and demonstrated oral and written communication skills.

Other:
Must be in possession of a valid Class “G” Driver’s license.

 

Hours of work:

Regular hours of work are Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 3:15 pm. Some overtime and weekends required.
